The Spirits are Always with Me: True Stories and Guidance from a Modern Shaman by Jane Shutt

Jane Shutt is a down-to-earth Yorkshire woman who leads an extraordinary life as one of Britain's leading shamanic healers. Shamanism is an ancient spiritual path that exists all around the world; and a shaman uses his or her close affinity with nature and spirits to help those in need of healing. In The Spirits are Always with Me, Jane Shutt explains what shamanism really is, and how it is especially relevant to us in the modern world as we seek to connect with our roots and with our own sense of inner purpose. She shares her own incredible story and the stories of many of those who have come to her for help and healing.

I found this to be an excellent book on Shamanism as experienced, not a how to book. But even as a book of personal experiences there was a lot of down to earth explanations of just what Shamanism is.

I especially liked the information that we don't choose Shamanism as a path, the Mysteries/Spirits pick us. Like wise we don't choose a power animal, they choose us. I like this as there are too many books out there that lay guilt trips on us that if we aren't able to do this or that somehow we are slacking or are deficient. This is a refreshing change.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

This book is well laid out and very straight forward. It tells it as it is in simple and direct language. It felt like as if the author was here and telling you the story. There are many anecdotes used to illustrate the different aspects of shamanism, which is useful for people trying to understand this way of life.

The book is divided into chapters dealing with different themes that one would encounter in their further study/understanding of shamanism. Beginning of course with a short description and explanation of what is/is not shamanism; and bringing out the importance of the healing aspect of shamanism. Then moving on to more specific areas such as soul retrieval, the land of the dead and elemental spirits.

It was a wonderful read. Many questions and scenarios that I had experienced and tried to deal with before are included in this book and it offered very good insight as to how to practice in negotiating with the spirits and maintaining the balance of an area.

Again, it felt like as if the author was right there telling you all these. Not a heavy lecture. But a light-hearted sharing over a cup of coffee! HAHA!
