From its debut in North Carolina to the touring production, This Too Will Pass has inspired audiences all over the country. Lyrical and powerful, Patterson reveals what it is to be an African-American in the twentieth century. Life wasn't easy in the south. But folks always knew that no matter what they were going through, this too will pass.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Mary Patterson as well as her mother, Shirley and her Aunt Dorothy who are portrayed in in her book. They attended our book club meeting last month and truly made an unbelievable impact on a group of 8 white women. The book is written as a choreopoem which I had never read or heard of prior to reading this, but impacts the reader with dialogue, poetry, and song. We were fortunate enough to have the author and her family members reenact parts of the book for us which was very insightful. Aunt Dorothy sang for us and really portrayed what it was like for a common, rural woman of the 1920s. The characters in the book are based on family members who had many struggles and dealt with adversities by using music, prayer, humor, and faith to overcome. I was amazed at the level of creativity and gifted talents that this impoverished family possesses. The women clearly in the book are the strongholds of the family and this was very evident further when meeting these three women who have such incredible gifts for all to learn and share. I highly recommend the book and encourage you to see a live performance of "This Too Will Pass" if it comes to your town.

This Too Will Pass provides the reader with a glimpse of life that many of us can only imagine. It is written as a choreopoem, which means that the characters talk in poetry and prose. An honest portrayal of Mary Patterson's real-life family, the story includes scenes depicting the effects of depression, alcohol abuse, war, poverty and abandonment. What makes this book so special is Patterson's ingenious prose. Commenting on abandoning his family, Theodore muses, "I dream/I lie/I leave lost hope/I cannot cope/their always growing needs." Reading the book will make you want to see it as a play, which includes music and dancing. Mary Patterson gives us insight into a family that has dealt with insurmountable struggles, but stays grounded by their faith in family and God. She's a young Maya Angelou -- in the making. I highly recommend this book -- a quick read (you'll still want to go back and re-read the exquisite prose) and great for book club discussions.
